Lisa Tyler ©June 22, 2010 Prejudice is a result of something you heard in your ears that formed a crust over your heart. No one was ever born with a prejudice to hate. All babies are born with a limited vision, and know the sound of mother’s voice and those who take care of it. As a toddler, children are fascinated by other people, other children, and are drawn to them. They want to come out of their room as soon as someone comes to your door, so forget naptime! A small child will share his candy with you, and you don’t even have to ask! They automatically have so much joy they want to let you experience it too. At some point, perhaps 4 years of age, a child has heard enough about this thing called Lack that they believe the candy will run out, so they no longer want to share. They already have their Joy space filled with Fear and all their new associations get referenced back to the Fear that it has accepted as truth, and the urge to hoard which seems to be wise self preservation. Later, by school age, a child has heard that there is something called “Us and Them”. They have learned of a division between people. What is ours, what is theirs, and the value of people and jobs and money. They hear adults talk about colors of skin and facial features, and where people live, and how to treat them. These are very bad things and now even less original Joy stuff exists in their little heads, because now they have to hold onto thoughts and ideas of Fear and Lack and Us and Them. Although they are still young enough to question whether we could be right or wrong about all this, because it feels really wrong, we don’t give them time to come to the right conclusion. We send them off to school, put their emotions and bodies under stress because of the separation from Familiar and Love, and we fill their minds with unrelated and useless information. Things that can’t be touched or seen only imagined like math and where something called Lithuania is. Slowly, year after year, we erode the child’s trust in his own instincts and shut out the God voice of the Spirit that he could hear as a child. He now has to depend on everything we teach him, everything he learns from books and everything our own fears are shaping him into. It’s as if we’ve blinded our children and put them into a strange country. Prejudice separates us from God and from our fellow man and brings us into sin, therefore into death - causing sickness, hate, and an entrance for demon spirits. Here are a couple of ways to get over prejudice. Find yourself blind one day. Now you’re relying on a servant to help you, and regardless of race, you NEED that person and you bond with them. Whether it’s your family members, a hired servant or whichever nurse is on that shift at a nursing home, the luxury of being prejudiced is gone. You can still hold onto it and ask someone to tell you what color skin your caregiver has, but I guarantee that you can’t justify it. All your old reasons for separation are gone and in its place is a feeling of separation from the entire world. Now it’s “Me and Them”. It’s a lonely place to be, and your heart will probably long to be united again, to feel like it belongs and is “The Same”. That’s what you have when you understand what Christ gave the world. Reconciliation with God, so that He no longer looks at you as “Me and Them”, but as “US” – Family. Another way to reason away prejudice is to think you see someone you know and love, but suddenly realize that person is the wrong color. You’re amazed! Here is someone who looks, talks and acts like your loved one, but it can’t be. You wonder how this could have happened, aren’t we all unique and different like the snowflakes? So you stare a bit, and get to wondering what this “other” version of your friend is like. What makes him tick? Who are they? What are THEY afraid of? And if they can be so similar to someone you love and respect, don’t they deserve respect too? Perhaps you’ll realize quickly that your loved one shares more with this imposter than he has different from them. Like in the situation above, the layer of skin where the pigments reside, is very thin. What really separates people is what is in their hearts. God loves them as much as He loves you and the Bible says we have no right to judge another man’s servant. In other words, every man is God’s servant or property and we’re being very rude and out of line to find fault with God’s beloved. How to completely rid yourself of prejudice. There are some people who believe they are not prejudiced, yet are. There are two areas that still separate folks and if you can conquer these two places, you can begin to heal your corner of the world. Prejudiced people don’t want to share a table with those they hate, and they don’t want to share a church with those they hate. You’ll see folks leaving churches all the time because someone made them mad, or the preacher said something they took offense at. You didn’t even need a person of a different color to enter the church to cause division because it’s NOT the people or what they’ve said that have caused the division, it is the devil himself and he’s having a great laugh over you if you’ve let him do it. So sit down to eat with whoever you have a problem with. In fact, invite them to your house and prepare the food yourself so that you’re sacrificing your time and heart for this person. Go to their church. Stand in their shoes and feel what they feel. Then pray and let God speak to your heart. The crust will fall off and you’ll feel blood and life rushing into areas you’ve almost lost over to death and decay. It will feel good! It will affirm to your soul that you have nothing to fear, and you are in control. There is no such thing as lack and God will provide all that you need daily. There is PLENTY in God’s kingdom both here on earth and in heaven to share with all who call upon the name of the Lord. God bless you! I hope this article blesses you with new life in old areas.
